Health Care Reform

The House passed the Democratic Leadership's Affordable Health Care for America Act, H.R. 3962, by a 220-215 vote. The bill passed with only one Republican vote, while thirty-nine Democrats votes against it. The close vote is a testament to strong grassroots lobbying in opposition to the bill by citizens like you. Small and mid-sized businesses across the country, employers and workers alike, have weighed in that this sweeping legislation comes at too high a cost. Your thoughts on the direction Congress should take on health care reform NOW can still influence the outcome, particularly over these next few weeks!

Attention now turns to the Senate, where Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) is expected to introduce a bill as soon as he receives a cost estimate on his proposal from the Congressional Budget Office. That could happen any day.  Although he has kept most details undercover, Senator Reid has said the bill will include a public insurance option with a state "opt out" provision. The bill will likely differ from the House bill on revenue raisers to pay for the overhaul. The House bill contains unacceptable mandates, penalties, and taxes.

Senate Democrats will need 60 votes rather than a simple majority to pass their proposal. Please contact your Members of Congress. Let them know that health care reform should not be paid for by America's small businesses.

Now is the time to speak up for your company and your industry. Tell Congress that small business is already shouldering an unfair tax burden.  They cannot shoulder the burden of health care reform.
